Orr, Ken | E-Mail Advisors | 06 November 2008 | Business Technology Trends & Impacts; Enterprise Risk Management & Governance
The good news: The American presidential election is finally over.
The bad news: The world is in the grip of the worst economic conditions since World War II (and/or the Depression) and investment banks, regular banks, real-estate brokers, construction firms, and auto manufacturers all over the world have fallen upon very hard times. Stock and commodity markets have plunged, the credit market has frozen up, and investors are hiding their money under their mattresses. No sectors or regions of the world are safe.

Murugesan, San | E-Mail Advisors | 30 October 2008 | Business Technology Trends & Impacts
Virtual worlds are brave new worlds on the Web. These three-dimensional, interactive Web environments can deliver an immersive experience that is much richer than what we currently experience with the traditional Web. As a result, virtual worlds are emerging as communal places for a wide range of activities -- gaming, social networking, education and training, marketing, and e-business [1, 2, 3]. Virtual worlds are a hot topic among both users and businesses eager to exploit and embrace these new worlds.

Orr, Ken | E-Mail Advisors | 23 October 2008 | Business Technology Trends & Impacts; Agile Project Management; Enterprise Architecture
Often, I get into discussions with clients and students about IT planning and portfolio management. Recently, I had a discussion that touched one of my most serious concerns: an extremely short turnaround on strategic projects. Here's how the conversation goes:

Kellen, Vince | E-Mail Advisors | 22 October 2008 | Business-IT Strategies; Business Technology Trends & Impacts; Business Intelligence
I remember the phone call well. My boss asked for a 13% reduction in budget quickly. A bit numb, my first reaction was to object, but the tone in his voice suggested that I shouldn't. I had to let a day pass to get over the emotional reaction and then I got to work. How can I cut costs without making my future a living hell?

Dooley, Brian J. | Executive Updates | 27 October 2008 | Business Technology Trends & Impacts
Developers of videoconferencing have struggled for years with the many problems involved in replacing the face-to-face meeting. While the reasons for videoconferencing are strengthened year by year, actual use of videoconferencing facilities has hardly kept pace. At the same time, new requirements for online meetings are emerging as we move into a collaborative, interactive, high-definition, high-bandwidth future.

Abdallah, Salam | Executive Updates | 09 October 2008 | Business Technology Trends & Impacts
Although virtual-world technology is in its developmental stage, its impact on societies and business operations is already evident. Last year, in Q4 alone, more than US $425 million had been invested in 15 virtual worlds; in Q1 2008, more than $184 million was invested in 23 companies.1 In addition, many children are being raised with broad access to virtual worlds. Indeed, they may spend more time watching TV, playing, socializing, and learning in a virtual world than in real life. This fact is crucial as this generation will become our next consumers and employees. The most popularized and controversial virtual world is Second Life (SL). SL is hitting mass media and raising hype among businesses, healthcare, education, entertainment, governments, and nongovernmental organizations.

Charette, Robert N. | E-Mail Advisors | 09 October 2008 | Enterprise Risk Management & Governance; Business-IT Strategies; Business Technology Trends & Impacts
There was an interesting story a few weeks ago in the Wall Street Journal about the electronic retailer Best Buy's internal prediction market [1]. Company executives use the prediction market, called TagTrade, to see how successful Best Buy employees think a particular project, idea, or initiative will be.

Orr, Ken | E-Mail Advisors | 09 October 2008 | Business Technology Trends & Impacts; Business Intelligence; Enterprise Architecture
Hard-gained skills often erode as new products, fashions, or politics come to dominate. I have come to believe that the ability to create large-scale database systems may be disappearing as well. Increasingly, when I look at large organizations actually employing computers in their day-to-day functions, I see the rise in the use of e-mail, local Access databases, and "mission-critical" spreadsheets to replace (augment) robust, integrated databases. I see from all this the emergence of the "Ad Hoc Enterprise."
